Tv Review: How To with John Wilson on HBO Maxx
My boyfriend and I stumbled upon a total hidden gem of HBO Maxx. It is a comedic Documentary series following John Wilson around New York talking about different subjects that relate to his life.
A lot of the show is just cleverly placed B roll of New York City but… there’s a little joke or little detail in every scene that goes with his narration. And it all follows a different subject like one episode is about Splitting Checks and then he ends up talking about a friend that paid for John’s birthday dinner on his business credit card so he could claim the dinner on his taxes- and then John went to a referee store to decide if the referee’s thought it was fair. And then he ended up at a referee convention. He interviews different real people and goes to different conventions to find out about things. It’s interesting for sure!
We ended up watching all of the episodes out of order in one night because they’re about 25 minutes each. Watching them out of order totally works… but you have to watch the last episode last because… the last episode has a very relatable twist that is kind of scary but refreshing to see in this point in time. Without spoiling too too much…I think most of the series was filmed before March of 2020 and the last episode was probably filmed in March of 2020. So... looking at the problem from the other side was very relatable and scary.… but also fascinating.
Totally recommend this show. lt is a favorite of mine and if you‘re a fan of Nathan Fielder or Demetri Martin- you might find this funny as well!
Definitely my favorite thing I’ve seen recently and I’d even say it’s a must- watch. There is some nudity in the episode about covering your furniture- they don’t blur it out on HBO Maxx. I think there may have been one other dirty joke or episode but I forget which episode it is. It is a more adult show so… keep that in mind but it’s really funny and just a nice slice of life. I’d love to see a second season or multiple seasons.
I think that’s everything- hope you guys like this review!
Bye! -Shannon
