The BEST Makeup Products:ALL BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES!

Okay so today I wanted to do this blog for a number of reasons. I bought a lot of these products last year because most of these brands had sales for Juneteenth. I was also thinking about doing a post on underrated makeup products (which I will still do) and I noticed a lot of them are from these brands... and you guys really need to buy these products because they're amazing and I love that a lot of stores like Ulta and Target have started selling them now.

What Is Juneteenth?

So before I talk about the brands I just want to give a quick explanation of what Juneteenth. After President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation- slavery was abolished and that was to go into effect on January 1st,1863. It wasn't until June 19th,1865 that word of this had reached Galveston, Texas and they were ordered to emancipate all slaves. Red is a color associated with Juneteenth because slaves were not allowed to drink red soda- so they celebrated their freedom by drinking red soda and red drinks.

This isn't something that I learned in history and it's something that should be celebrated as much as The Fourth of July- as not everyone was free on July 4th, 1776 since there were still slaves. I had learned about the holiday from shows like Blackish, Atlanta and Carla Hall's Soul Food cookbook. It's definitely something all history books should teach.

I also did look on wikipedia just to give my brief explanation for this article because I was unsure of the exact years and the exact places and reasons.

Fenty Beauty

Fenty Beauty is owned by Rhianna and it's a pretty well known brand so this isn't really going to be what I focus on today- but I wanted to give a mention to their Snap Shadows because I have one... I haven't used it a lot... but it's really good and no one ever really talks about these. They're tiny 6 pan palettes- I think it's under $25 from Sephora... might be $30 but still it isn't bad. You don't get a lot of product for the price but it's good still and easy to come up with looks for.

Mented Cosmetics

Mented is a fantastic makeup line. They are still a fairly new line- I think I actually heard that they started in botiques and then expanded into a website during the pandemic or something like that? That could be slightly off because I feel like they're a fairly big brand now but I think that is what Tory Johnson who does Good Morning America's Deals and Steals segment said.

Anyway they have amazing lipsticks. I really like the Semi Matte Lipsticks and the matte lipsticks. I also think they have an awesome neutral eyeshadow palette. The Everyday palette is really a gorgeous easy to use neutral palette. I think this would be a great palette for beginners. There is some hardpan on my shades... which does make it hard to work with... but it's still a nice palette and I use it a lot. It's also only $28- which isn't bad for the amount of shadows you get in here.

Mented's lipsticks are available at Target (online) and their full line is available at Ulta (mostly online) and on their website.

Uoma Beauty

Uoma's foundation is my absolute favorite foundation... and I think it's kind of brilliantly made. A lot of black owned brands have a huge line of foundation shades and my skintone is not one I can usually find a perfect match for... but their White Pearl shade is a pretty perfect match for me. My skin is light and in a lot of brands I'm the lightest cool shade... but there are a lot of skintones lighter than minds and I don't really think my skin is cool but neutral... and in a lot of foundations the neutral shades are too dark for me so cool is what I go for.

I also like their eyeshadow palettes. I only have one- the Black Magic Carnival. I've been using it a lot lately. I don't like it as much as other palettes I'm mentioning but it's kind of just as good. It's just something I find myself using a lot now and I've used the other products I'm talking about a lot all the time.

I think this is the brand I really need to try more from. They have some gorgeous products... I want to try their Badass Icon lipstick. These are all named after famous black singers and actresses too and... my mom is a huge Tina Turner fan and they have an absolute PERFECT Tina Turner shade called Tina. I don't think it's a shade that will look good at me and my mom doesn't wear makeup and would probably never wear it... but I kind of want to get it and get it for her just because we love Tina and it's such a great shade.

Uoma is available on their website and Ulta's website.

Juvia's Place

So Juvia's Place is a pretty well known brand at this point. Their eyeshadow palettes are FANTASTIC. I feel like these are pretty well known though. I love their Vanessa palette- this was a collaboration with an influencer and it's just a super super pretty palette. It looks nice and fancy and I love using it.

I think their blushes are underrated too. I have the lighter shade of the Nubian Blush palette and I have a pigment palette that I got in a mystery box that I don't think is available anymore... but I use those pigments as blushes mostly and I like it.

Their lipsticks I think are fairly new to their line and I really like them. I just picked one up called 2020 that was really pretty. They have their lipsticks arranged by color families too like Mauves and Neutrals and pinks... it's pretty nice.

The most underrated product from them, however is one I use every single day and that is the I Prep, I Prime. I used to love the Nars Eyeshadow Primer- and I was like "this is the only one that works for me." And then I realized it really doesn't work all that well for me... so when I saw Juvia's place had a primer I was like "Juvia's place has great products- let me try that eye primer" And it worked really well!

Juvia's Place is available in stores and online at ulta- they actually usually have nice displays at ulta with their new products too and they have their own website too... which fun fact ships out of Newark, NJ. I live in NJ and went to college in Newark so... it's pretty fast on the shipping. I think they might use DHL too and I love DHL trucks lol.

Beauty Bakerie

It's an actual crime that this brand isn't more popular. Honestly. Stop what you're doing now- go to target and pick up their Get That Dough eyeshadow palette. This is the EASIEST and most beautiful neutral palette... and it's $14. And it's right there at Target.

All of the products I’ve tried from this brand are pretty amazing. Their Lip Whips really do last all day and they’re comfy and they have some great colors. I also really love their Cotton Candy Champagne Blush and highlight Palette. It’s such cute packaging and it really works well. Their Wake and Bake oil is amazing. It’s just a really great brand.

Okay… that’s a lot of products but… you need to try some of these. They may be having sales this week too for Juneteenth so… I’d grab it when you can on sale.

Bye! -Shannon
