Shannon’s Pop Culture Throwback Moments: Look What You Made Me Do Video
Okay- so I want to talk more about pop culture moments... and ones that I have significant memories linked with... and this is probably my least favorite Taylor Swift song... but I do have significant memories linked to it and... it happened around this time of the year... soooo let's talk about it!
First things first though: I haven't watched this video probably since the first time I saw it years ago so let's look at the video...
Okay so the video is very good. There are some great Taylor outfits- there's some good dancing. It's not a terrible song... Taylor swift is a good singer and everything... the chorus of this is just a little bit repetitive and I don't like the phrase "look what you made me do" in general because no one makes anyone do anything. I don't like being blamed for other people's actions. There's a lot of stuff in Taylor's lyrics that I totally get people love and obsess over... but to me they sometimes just make me anxious... and it's okay if you feel that way or if you don't feel that way too. I feel weird being a casual fan of Taylor Swift that feels anxious any time Anti Hero gets stuck in my head... there are some songs that just do that to me- even by my favorite bands.
Anyway that's not what this post was about- this is about my memories of watching the video with my friends while we were either getting ready to see Lady Gaga on her tour while she was seeing Joanne or it was after... possibly both.
So I would say my friends at the time kept up with music culture and music videos a little bit better than me and my friend Georgie was like "ohhh Taylor Swift has this crazy new video out." And she showed it to us and we all watched it together at the time of seeing this Lady Gaga concert... and that was pretty cool. We watched it in our hotel room and while I don't think any of us liked the song that much... we thought it was a cool video and it was cool to see Taylor going in a different direction and have this sort of "character" aspect embracing some of her other songs and... "eras." I love when musicians have characters.
And this was the first thing she did that really felt like something our hero- lady Gaga would do. Music videos were kind of getting less and less good and this was a good one to get people interested in music videos again.
It was a song I thought about for a while- I read some breakdowns of it and... it's not my favorite "I'm pissed" song ever- but at the time it was a really really good one.
This was a big deal when it dropped and this is how I remember it. Thanks for throwing back with me and hopefully I'll do some more of these!
