Shannon’s Adventures: Shucked the Musical Review

Okay- you guys know I love Broadway and I love an adventure- so this week my boyfriend and I had an adventure on Broadway to see the musical Shucked- about Corn and FILLED with amazing performances and Corny Jokes.

The musical kind of kept the plot under wraps- which I think helped the marketing a lot because you gotta know what this musical about corn is about right? Now that it's closing in January- I think it's okay to talk about the plot.

So Cobb County is a very very VERY small town that's main crop is Corn- that's how they make their money and they make other products using the corn. There are other farms and products but nothing like Corn. On the day of Maizy and Beau's wedding- the corn starts to wilt and they can't figure out why the corn won't grow. So Maizy decides to leave Cobb County and go to Tampa- where she hears about a Corn Doctor- not knowing it was a con man pretending to be a podiatrist.

So the Corn Doctor sees that Maizy has a bracelet on and he thinks the rocks on the bracelet are valuable-

So he brings them to a jeweler to find out and they are... so he plans to go to Cobb County and get the rocks and bring them back to the jewelers so he can pay off his debts.

There's a bit of a love triangle between Maizy and the con man- named Gordy- and she ends her engagement to Beau... but they've been in love with each other forever and they belong together.

This musical had some of the best performances I've ever heard... which I wasn't really expecting. I heard that Independently Owned by Alex Newell was so good it got a standing ovation... I was in the very back of the mezzanine so there was no room for me

to stand but I did applaud and there was a long applause... omg it was amazing. I want to see Alex Newell in anything they do. This was outstanding!

Another song I thought was really outstanding- was actually Beau's song Someone Else Will was really great too! I wasn't expecting him to have a voice like that! I'm not sure if he's a country singer or if he's a musical actor but... he's so so good. I would definitely listen to anything he's in. I don't think he's the original actor either- but I could be wrong.

I also really loved a very sweet song between Lulu- Alex Newell's Character- and Maizy after they get in a fight and they talk about how they'll always be cousins but they get to be friends. It almost made me cry because I am friends with my sister and my cousins.

And I loved the Corn Mix- which is where they drunkenly sang other songs from throughout the show and some different characters sang different songs... I thought that was so cool!

I don't think the songs were as memorable as something like Hadestown or Hamilton- but they were really unique songs and I will think of the songs I mentioned particularly a lot.

This was also a really funny show... one of the funniest I think I've seen and I really liked that!

I could definitely see this show doing really well regionally and in high schools... I would want to be involved in a production of this show... it was just really really fun!

Overall a great night at the theater! Next week I will talk all about our adventures trying to get Rush tickets and I'll have my New York Haul the following week!

Hopefully I'll have some more fun adventures soon- I love doing these adventure posts because I don't always take pictures when I go places but I love to document the experience somehow.

Bye!

-Shannon
