Shannon Goes To The Movies: Renfield
Alright so this weekend was PACKED for me. It is what I've dubbed Shanfest- I am closing manager at the store I work at 4 days in a row. This was an accident and not something that usually happens... but it happened and that's okay- I'm just going to embrace it- the only thing I was disappointed in was the fact that Renfield is coming out! Bummer! But luckily it was showing on Thursday and I was off on Thursday so I got the tickets for Thursday! There wasn't much of a crowd- and this is a movie that would maybe be fun with a crowd... but the people I saw it with were fun.
Overall my boyfriend and I thought it was a fun movie. I think it starts out a little slow and I wasn't sure I liked it at first- but I did think the world was fun and I liked the characters a lot. I really liked that this was focused in Renfield and his struggles as Dracula's Familiar. I liked the story with the Lobo family but... I have some criticism about that also... and the Awkwafina storyline was a little weird- but I am a fan of hers.... so I still liked seeing her in the movie.
There was sort of a theme throughout the movie where Awkwafina's character, Renfield and Ben Schwartz's character were all going through similar struggles with Corrupt bosses- or basically just working for a corrupt system. I would have liked it if they maybe connected that a little better and had all of them work together against the system instead of a basic Good vs. Evil battle. It was still good but it did feel a little bit basic.
I think my favorite parts of the movie were obviously Nicolas Cage as Dracula- but I did really like the group therapy sessions. Renfield has an apartment in this movie and it's just... so funny for a Dracula movie.
A lot of the criticisms I've been seeing have commented that it felt like two different movies- I kind of feel like Awkwafina's role and the police storyline was meant to be a different movie- but then they just kind of added it on to this Dracula movie. It was good- it just felt a little weird and Awkwafina's part seemed oddly cast.
And then we went out to eat at a diner nearby and I had waffles and it was just a good time! We really enjoyed the movie and I'm happy we saw it!
Bye!
