Shannon Goes to The Movies: Ghostbusters Afterlife Review
Alright! Ghostbusters Afterlife is... a really good movie. I have seen 3 movies since the shutdown ended and this is the only one I've been able to stay awake through! And that's something! There were things I didn't like about the movie but... overall it was such a fun movie and my boyfriend and I both walked away saying "yeah, I'd buy this on Blu Ray." It's worth it!
So it starts out with a mom and her 2 kids moving to a farm after inheriting it from her father- who abandoned her to work on this farm... which ended up just being a dirt farm- no crops or anything... and her father was just seen as a crazy "dirt farmer." Then it kind of picks up and you find out why there are ghosts and what the kids grandfather was working on and who he was (Egon Spangler of corse.)
So Paul Rudd... was not the star of the movie. He wasn't really even in the movie that long- it was Phoebe that really stole the show. McKenna Grace looked just like Harold Remis and... she did such a good job kind of carrying the movie. Plus she sang a song that was in the end of the movie... this girl is going places for sure. She did a really great job.
I also liked that their mom was an age appropriate love interest for Paul Rudd and they didn't make her someone that was a lot younger. She was played by Carrie Coon who I thought did a great job... and she really did play a character that had quite an arc.
I also liked that it focused on a nerdy girl that was trying to fit in... they just did a really good job with everything. The things that I didn't like were small compared to what a sweet tribute to Harold Remis this movie was and how fun it was.
I was expecting this movie to be like ALL Product Placement... but really there was only one scene where they were in a wall mart that showed Baskin and Robbins Ice Cream that was the big product placement scene. And that was the same scene with the Minions of the Ghostbusters world: The Mini Stay Puft Marshmallow Men... who I've gotta say...did nothing for the whole movie... but also weren't in the movie for long enough for them to be too annoying. It was a nicely balanced scene.
There are also some weird transition moments in the beginning movie especially where there are 3 separate stories going on and they don't really all payoff. Some stuff is kind of skipped over and one story we just don't really see develop and it doesn't totally matter... but it was a little odd.
There were also parts where it felt a little too similar to the first Ghostbusters movie... but honestly it was nice to have a Ghostbusters movie that took place in a rural area instead of New York City... it really gave the movie something different and it made it a little bit spookier.
I'd give the movie a solid 3 out of 5 stars... maybe 3 and a half just because I did really have fun watching it. I think kids will like the movie- I don't think it was too scary. There were a lot of kids in the movie theater I saw it in...which is weird. I don't really think of the original Ghostbusters as a kids movie... but this one kind of starred kids so it definitely seemed like kids can really enjoy it.
Alright- that is everything! I hope you guys like this! It is worth watching for sure!
Bye!
