Shannon Goes To The Movies: Barbenheimer

Which do I review first... Barbie? Oppenheimer? Do I talk about the theater going experience or just do a review? Yes. I will be tackling my Oppenheimer and Barbie reviews in one post- as well as telling you guys some tips and... the like. This might be a long post and the reviews might be shorter... but one thing I will say about both: They are A+ movies, perfectly cast, and I would say a must see in theaters. There is one that I think is my favorite movie of all time and what is becoming my personality right now... and that is Barbie. But Oppenheimer is definitely also one of the best movies I've seen... and yeah. Let's talk about them.

Oppenheimer

So we decided to see Oppenheimer first- and although I was more excited to see Barbie- this was definitely the right call. Oppenheimer is a very long movie and it's good to get that done early in the day. I also saw Oppenheimer with my boyfriend and my parents- so we had 2 extra people with us for this movie. I also know personally I was more excited for Barbie and I don't think I could have focused on Oppenheimer if I had seen Barbie before.

So Oppenheimer I would say is a pretty perfectly paced movie and when I say this movie is perfectly cast... it is PERFECTLY cast. Cillian Murphy was great, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, even smaller roles like Josh Peck and Jack Quaid... all did fantastic in this movie. I really liked everyone except Casey Affleck. But other than that- everyone was phenomenal.

The story also- has a lot of history to it and it was really interesting to learn more about this particular part of history. It was very sad- but they really showed the full story. It was great.

My boyfriend was upset that we wouldn't be able to hear it in a standard theater because Nolan movies can be hard to hear... but this one I could hear and I thought it sounded great. Also speaking of sound- the score to this movie was fantastic as well. I loved it overall.

Barbie

Everyone working at the theater seemed so excited for Barbie. Oppenheimer too- but everyone was wearing pink- everyone had I ❤️ Barbie buttons on... it seemed like everyone was having a great time with this movie. And our showing was very festive. I feel like everyone had Barbie attire on, there was a group of cowboy Ken's- some kids with pink boas on... there were a lot of people really excited for this.

Now there were kids in the theater and I do think kids could watch it... I'm not sure my niece would like seeing it in theater- but I think she might enjoy watching it at home. The very last line of the movie is what I think may need explaining- if you know you know. It also is about a woman having an existential crisis- which is relatable if you're the same age as Margot Robbie or America Ferrera... but not if you're a child. It's not quite as much about Barbie as it is about those things.

I feel like everyone can relate to the Barbie's in this movie in some way- no matter if you played with Barbie's or how you played with Barbie's. I'm assuming my boyfriend never really played with Barbie's and I think he might have some familiarity with them from his sister... but he absolutely loved the movie. It was like nonstop laughs but it also had a very sweet message that brought us to tears.

This movie is also just... very special. It's probably the funniest movie that's been released since 22 Jump Street... and it's very much a girl power movie- but in some ways I think it's funnier to men...

My boyfriend cracked up at the Ken song- I don't think he was prepared for it. They showed a clip of it during The Bachelorette so I had known about it... and I sent it to him- but he didn't watch it and I'm glad he didn't because... seeing his face at that song was just the cutest thing I've ever seen.

Oppenheimer and Barbie

Both of these movies had a twist villain... which I wasn't expecting at all. The third act in Oppenheimer I didn't really like until after it was all finished. After the bomb hits- it just wasn't what I expected.... but it was still very interesting.

More Fangirling About Barbie

Barbie was fantastic the whole way through. It is my favorite movie of all time and my bosses are now calling me Barbie and I will gladly answer to it.

You also don't need to be having an exentsial crisis to enjoy either of these movies- but it does help. Lol 😂

I love Margot Robbie and she was amazing in this movie... but Ryan Gosling as Ken kind of stole the show a little bit. I miss Ryan Gosling in comedies and... I feel like people don't realize how funny he is. I don't think this movie would have worked with any other Ken.

Don't forget about Allen and Midge

Midge is a pregnant doll that they recalled that I didn't have as a child- but it existed when I was a child and I have seen it in real life.

Allen is Midge's husband but they don't refer to that in this movie at all so I don't think they are. Allen is just Ken's Buddy and all of Ken's clothes fit him. And that is hilarious to me that Matel was like "will parents buy a doll of Allen??? Maybe if they knew all of Ken's clothes will fit him."

And Michael Cera understood the assignment and was phenomenal as Allen.

Will Ferrel and the Matel executives

It was so funny to see all of the Matel executives trying to function... and trying to get to Barbieland... they were all just really great.

Reviews

Oppenheimer was an A+- my boyfriend and parents also loved it. Barbie was an A++ I think everyone should see this movie. My boyfriend and I could not stop smiling when we left it... it was very very good.

Would I do a double feature again?

I think it would have to be two movies of this caliber to be a really great double feature. These two movies kind of had similar themes oddly... but they were very different in tone- so it just made for a very good double feature. If it was something like Barbie and let's say Mean Girls- I don't think it would work. People are saying Saw Patrol is the next double feature... I don't think so. I won't see saw and paw patrol on the same day. Possibly Saw and Five Nights at Freddy's- but even still I'd want to see them different days because they're both horror movies.

My other pro tip is to save your soda and popcorn so you can get a refill between movies.

Also pro tip: dress up in themed movie attire. Everyone looked so great- and it was really fun. Also people were shouting jokes in the movie and laughing uproariously... which was great. I could see this being a Rocky Horror type of experience. It was just fun to watch.

Okay I think that is everything I want to say... go see both of these movies in any order you'd like... they're fantastic.

Bye!
