Pop Culture Throwback Thursday: Taylor Swift vs Kanye West
Alright- so next up on my pop culture throwback Thursday is a moment I remember pretty well... and that is when Kanye West got on Stage at the VMAS and interrupted Taylor Swift's speech for winning Best Music Video (I think?) for her You Belong With Me video (again- I think that's the one.) Kanye claimed Beyoncé had the best video of all time for Single Ladies.
So I was watching at the time- but I was also checking Facebook and looking at things online so I wasn't 100% paying attention to the awards- so when I heard it I didn't know it was Kanye West- I just thought it was "some crazy guy." That seems kind of strange to think a random audience member would go on stage and say that... but Kanye wasn't really known for doing crazy things at the time. I think this was after the incident at the Hurricane Katrina fundraiser- but other than that... at the time Kanye was pretty much everyone's favorite rapper.
So I was like "what that was Kanye West???" And I wasn't really the biggest Taylor Swift fan at the time. I liked the You Belong With Me video a lot- I would say the Single Ladies video is more Iconic- but I think that's partially because of the Justin Timberlake SNL sketch.
So yeah- I like everyone else was upset Taylor had her moment stolen from her. I didn't feel too bad because Taylor was talented- I didn't think this would be the only time she'd accept an award... but it's a little maddening that MTV didn't give her another moment to actually do her speech. At least- not that I remember.
I've also been thinking a lot lately on if Beyoncé really did deserve the award... and I'm not sure. I love both music videos but at the time I kind of liked the Taylor Swift one more because I liked when Music Videos told a story and this one told a story. Beyonces video had great dancing and I remember trying to do the dance with friends and seeing it in movies like Sex and The City and at Weddings... both iconic songs both iconic videos. I guess I don't have much more to say on it from there but... yeah.
So yeah. Do you remember watching this? I remember thinking "why do The VMAs not have security to keep people off stage" which is the same thing I thought during the Oscars slap. I guess these things should be expected? And I guess that's why people record these award shows now lol.
Bye!
