Movie Review: Knock at The Cabin
Alright last night I finally saw the M Night Shymalon movie Knock at The Cabin and I absolutely loved it. It is definitely my favorite movie of his... I rated it 4 stars on my letterboxed review and here's more of what I thought of it!
This movie is an incredibly tense thriller that follows a family- Erich, Andrew and their adopted daughter Wen who are on vacation in a secluded cabin. Wen starts talking to a man about bugs that she collected and he seems nice enough- until he tells Wen that he's going to knock at their cabin and she has to let her Daddy's let her in. And then things get scary. 4 people knock at the cabin and tell the family that they have to make a choice in order to save the world from an upcoming apocalypse. They've seen the world end and they know that the death of one of these family members will save the world from impending doom.
Now with M Night Shymalon movies you expect some sort of twist... and I don't want to spoil this movie... but I don't think there really was a twist. I might do an "expectations vs Reality" for an upcoming Movie Monday... either next week or the week after where I will maybe include a spoiler... but I enjoyed that they didn't overdo this very creepy plot and give this ending a twist. I think aside from twist endings- M Night really, really does tension building well and this was one of the most tense movies I've ever seen... and it was really really good.
It looked really nice too. The lighting, the location and the set. It was so creepy and it just looked really good.
I also liked the way the movie used flashbacks. I tend to get bored while watching Single Location movies... and this kind of had some cutaway flashbacks that just broke the movie up enough as the tension was building. They also didn't overexplain things in these flashbacks... and they didn't take away from the main plot of the movie. They didn't even really follow the story of the movie, they just kind of added to our characters and we could see exactly how they ended up together and with their daughter... and you could see how the movie played out the way that it did in the end.
One thing I will say... that I didn't really not like... this movie didn't have to be an R rated movie. Most of the gore and blood was off-screen . I think the only thing it was rated R for was for cursing... and maybe some violence but there really was not much on screen.
There is some real horror to this movie...and I don't want to spoil the ending... but think of all the horrors that happen when you watch the news and there are several terrible things happening at once... and it's like "Is this the end of the world or is this a regular news day?"
So yeah I definitely really liked this movie. I would recommend checking it out- I think its pretty much out of theaters now but I would buy the Blu Ray when it comes out... and I think it's worth it.
Bye!
