Movie Review: A Minecraft Movie

Okay- today on my “see as many movies as possible” viewing I saw the Minecraft movie… well yesterday I saw it actually but… I thought it was a fun movie, it wasn’t a perfect movie and I don’t really know anything about Minecraft… but I feel like it was as good of a Minecraft movie as we could really expect.
I wasn’t really expecting on seeing this movie at all- but the more I heard about it the more I saw the hype surrounding it and the fact that this is pretty much the only movie playing at my theater currently it seemed like the timing was just right and I had to see this movie.
My favorite parts of the movie were the jokes. Jared Hess directed this movie- he is of corse known for Napoleon Dynamite which is a movie I love and will watch pretty much whenever it’s on. This was a very corporate movie for Jared Hess’s unique Indie sense of humor… but it still had the jokes that were in there because you knew that Hess found them really funny… and those were really good. Yes there were Tots in this movie… and that was probably my favorite joke.
Jason Mamoa’s character was also very funny. He was a local hero that was known for having a retro video game store- and he was sort of mentoring the kid that was in the movie who was good at building things… but really the kid was mentoring him. It was very sweet and charming. Jason Mamoa did a really good job with this character… and it was just funny overall.
The thing that was maybe my least favorite part of the movie was that 1) there were soooo many characters in the movie and 2) the characters had little to no connection in the movie. It would have been easy to make Jason Mamoa an uncle that Henry and Natalie were going to live with. They probably could have cut Natalie and Dawn all together… even though I do really like both actresses in the roles and I thought Danielle Brooks was very funny as Dawn… the 2 characters did not add too much it just felt like they wanted 2 girl characters and they just kind of gave them nothing to do. They weren’t bad characters- it was just a little bit random. It felt like they had too many characters and they didn’t know what to do with them… so they were just sort of there for the journey.
And… there were parts I almost fell asleep in the movie. I kind of zoned out during a big part that I guess was a character death… sort of… so I was confused during that but… in general I just thought it was a fun movie. There were 2 other family’s seeing the movie also- one family snuck in their Minecraft Meal from McDonalds which was fun. Overall people just seemed to be having fun with it.
I should also mention we saw it in 3D- which is fine if that’s the only showtime you can get. There was really nothing special about seeing it in 3D- but it did make a fun movie experience. 3D movies can be expensive so it’s not worth paying an expensive price for… but it’s still fun and I think the kids seemed to have fun with that too.
So yeah if you’re going into this movie expecting Citizen Kane- you probably won’t like it but… it’s A Minecraft movie. It’s pretty good for what it is. I would compare it more to something like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Amoung Theives. It’s a fun representation of the game it’s based off of.
Bye!
