Movie Monday: What I Watched in April
Apri was a big month for newly released movies and just movie watching in general for me because of my obsession with the 2000s movies... and at the end I'll do my AMC A List Recap
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Theives ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
This was fun I have a review of it already and this started my 2000s movie obsession.
The Godfather Part II ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Godfather Part III ⭐️⭐️
I'm just going to talk about these two together because The Godfather Part II is probably one of the best movies of all time and Part III is one of the most disappointing conclusions to a series of all time. I'm going to have to watch the other cut of Godfather III and the Godfather Anthology to see if that can salvage it... but Godfather 3 was just bad. Sophia Copala is a good director- but AWFUL actress.
The Super Mario Brothers Movie ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I gave this 3 and a half on my letterboxd account- but Mario was a fun movie and I think it deserves 4 stars. I'm also just excited to see what they do with this series and the othe Nintendo movies they could do. Loved this one.
See No Evil, Hear No Evil ⭐️⭐️
This movie stars Richard Pryor as a blind man and Gene Wilder as a deaf man- and somehow these 2 get accused of a crime they didn't commit and they get into some hijinks. This wasn't as funny as I had thought it would be. Also this movie 100% could not be made today... but it was fun to see Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder together.
Napoleon Dynamite ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️
This was the first movie I really wanted to look at for my 2000s movie post- and I loved this. I wasn't even paying that much attention but its just all laughs. This was just fun to watch and I'm probably going to watch it again!
Not Another Teen Movie ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
Okay so I gave this 3 stars on Letterboxd but... I do really like it so I'm going to keep it 3 1/2 stars. It did go on a little long... but this is the best of all the Movie Movies- it has a funny plot and it spoofs the movies in a way that's funny without relying too heavily on pop culture references from the time or gross out humor. This was just a good spoof!
Back To School ⭐️⭐️
This was okay. Rodney Dangerfield goes to college to be close with his son and everyone loves him. This one is a little creepy- but Rodney Dangerfield is really really funny.
Date Movie 1/2 Star
This is probably the worst of the movie movies. It's kind of hard to spoof movies that are already comedies because watching this movie just made me wish I was watching the funnier movies that this was parodying. I love My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Meet The Parents and Meet The Fockers are good too and this also didn't parody these movies that well. And the pop culture references make for a very short shelf life for the laughs in this movie.
Renfield ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 stars
This was just a fun movie. It kind of felt disjointed a bit when I was watching it in theaters- I kind of think the Awkwafina sub plot was supposed to be a different movie- but I still thought this was kind of fun. I actually want to watch it again when it's out on blu ray or on streaming. Nicholas Cage was great... and Nicholas Hoult was actually funny too. I really liked this one!
Swimfan ⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Stars
I wonder if I should just give this 2 stars... I think I would watch this again though- so it gets 2 and a half. This is a thriller that takes place in High School and... it wasn't bad... but the villain in this movie just got too strong. And the ending isn't really what I wanted. I feel like too much of the blame was on the female villain of the movie, when the guy protagonist of this movie was a jerk. And I guess she deserved the blame she got... but everyone was just believing everything this girl said? For no reason??? And they don't really play up the fact that the guy is unlikable... this could have been really good. The concept was exciting and the actors were fine... this just needed a bit more.
Man of The Year ⭐️⭐️ 1/2 stars
I didn't really think this movie was that funny when I saw it in theaters... but I kind of knew what to expect watching it this time around and I have a better understanding of politics- so I was able to enjoy it a little bit more because of that. Robin Williams and Laura Linney were great. The second half of this movie is better than the first. I would watch this again- but it wouldn't be my first choice.
The Pacifier ⭐️⭐️1/2
This was pretty funny... I did a whole post on this one- I might include it in my 2000s movie post too because this was my pick for 2005... but I covered it pretty well comparing it to The Game Plan... so it just kind of depends on if I watch another movie from 2005! Bonkers is how I describe this one!
Ghost Ship ⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Stars
This was trying something... I'll talk about this in my 2000s post. It fell a little flat- but it was good. This will be included in my 2000s post. So I won't talk about it too much!
The Game Plan ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was great. I thought this was funny, the rock was really great and it had a lot of heart. I miss Disney Live Action movies like this instead of the actual movies with terrifying CGI Flounder who looks like Pete Wentz and I thought my boyfriend was joking when he sent me the picture of the poster and I just... CANNOT stop thinking about it... in a bad way.
But the Game Plan was great.
Cocaine Bear ⭐️⭐️
This was dissapointing to me. I didn't want to see this in theaters because I didn't think it looked that great-but I was excited to see it on streaming... but then I was disappointed. I don't know- there were so many stories going on, the deaths were sometimes just kind of glossed over and... there were so many characters. I get they do that because a lot of them don't make it till the end but... it didn't work for me. I'd watch a sequel- but this felt like it took itself too seriously.
Blazing Saddles ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
I have to say I was a little disappointed in this movie. I loved it at the end, I was really laughing... but its Mel Brooks- still a great movie... I just didn't like it as much as I thought I would.
Shock Treatment
I can't give a review to this one. Part of me was really bored by it and part of me was like "this is better than I was expecting." This is a sequel to The Rocky Horror Picture Show but anything that you liked about Rocky Hororr Picture Show is not in this...and it had SOOOO Many songs and none of them are memorable... but the singers in this movie were REALLY GOOD! Brad and Janet in this are better than in the original... It's also fair to mention I watched this movie one day before Barry Humphries passed away- and he was in this movie... so I couldn't go back and review it after he died. I would watch this again so if I had to I'd give it 3 stars... but I can see why people don't like it.
So I Married an Axe Murderer ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
I feel like I should just give this one 4 stars because... this is a movie I've seen a million times and it's actually underrated. This was my sister's favorite movie when I was little- so even though I shouldn't have watched this when I was little- I watched it a lot and it's just so so funny. Mike Myers's is the main character and he plays the dad too... this is so funny the intro is the most 90s intro of all time... I just really like this one. I would recommend this.
The Rock ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I thought this was a great action movie. This is kind of a James Bond movie- look up the theory on that one because it seems like a secret James Bond movie. This stars Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery and Sean Connery is a prisoner and they need his help because people get trapped in Alcatraz... it's just really really good. This is one of my favorite action movies- I would totally watch this again. And a lot of Nicholas Cage memes came from this movie... so this is great.
Twins ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was shocked at how much I liked this movie. Danny Devito was fantastic and so was Arnold Schwarzenegger. I think he's kind of an underrated funny actor... and I was impressed by this movie. I would watch Triplets if it ever gets made. I would probably watch Junior.
And that is every movie! Let's see my AMC Stubs for the month!
So I saw Dungeons and Dragons, The Super Mario Bros Movie and Renfield this month. Dungeons and Dragons was in Dolby, so that was more expensive, and for some reason Mario was a little more expensive too even though I saw it in a regular theater.... but it was a different theater than the one I usually go to and probably at a time that's a little more expensive. All together it was 33.26 that I would have paid including the fees- but because I have A List I paid 26.60... so I saved a very scary 6.66. But I also got popcorn and a soda at all these (2 for Mario cause I saw it with friends) and I would have saved a little with those... and I think I had a $5 rewards I used... so I did save a bit more than 6.66 lol. This month I'm not sure, I didn't get to see Beau is Afraid or Evil Dead Rise yet- and I want to see those... plus Guardians of the Galaxy and more- so yeah!
Bye!
