Movie Monday: The Shaspen Awards
So the Oscar's were last night... they have not happened yet at the time of me writing this... but here's what I think should have won and what should have been nominated. I didn't see that many movies this year and... a lot of these I haven't seen recently... but yeah. Also I'm naming this after the combined name of me and my boyfriend... and I may include his opinions but... this is mostly going to be me I think.
Best Picture: The Nomineees
Okay I'm not going to have Nominees for everything but I feel like I need to for this one specifically.
Everything,Everywhere All At Once- obviously this is a give- in. I loved this movie, my boyfriend loved it and I will be rooting for this in the best picture category and every acting category at the Oscar's this year. It deserves to win.
Bullet Train- A Surprising Smash for both me and Aspen. This was probably my second or third favorite movie of the year. I watched this twice- once in theaters and once at home when I had Covid. Love it.
Nope- The fact that this did not get a nomination is an actual crime. This was the best movie I saw in theaters this year and after seeing it a second time- it is a totally different movie.
Minions Rise of Gru- Yeah why not. Aspen did not vote on this one.
Pearl- Again I'm a little surprised Pearl was not nominated- I do think Mia Goth deserved to be considered for Best Actress. I liked this more than X and it wasn't the best movie... but I'm still going to nominate it for this category.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever- This is one of the most entertaining movies I saw this year. I did really enjoy it- seeing it in theaters was very fun. I thought Letitia Wright did a great job and... this might have been hard to act in. The heartbreak in this movie was real... it's incredibly sad.
The Batman- Another one of my favorites of the year. I loved Robert Pattinson as Batman and I thought this was a very fun and scary movie. I'd love to see more in this series.
Elvis- I just watched this movie a few weeks ago and I loved it. I just thought it was really good and Austin Butler did a fantastic job.
And The Shaspen Goes To... Nope!
Congratulations to Nope for winning the first ever Shaspen for best picture. I will be accepting the Shaspen on its behalf.
Best Actress- The Nominees
Michelle Yeoh- Everything, Everywhere All At Once
Letitia Wright- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Mia Goth- Pearl
Keke Palmer- Nope
Amandla Stenberg- Bodies, Bodies, Bodies
Okay, tbh I didn't love Bodies bodies bodies that much but... I decided to nominate Amandla anyway because I thought she did a better job than Georgina Campbell in Barbarian and anyone from Scream 5... lol I did think the movie was okay overall.
I am having a hard time deciding between all of the nominees... I was planning on just giving it to all of them- but then I feel like I want to give it to everyone but Amandla-and that's rude. I also kind of want to give it to Keke Palmer but Nope might just sweep the competition and I don't really want that... I was thinking of giving it to Mia Goth but I did like a lot of these movies more than Pearl... this is a tough one.
And the Winner Is... Keke Palmer for Nope!
I do think Michelle Yeoh deserves to win- but hopefully she won the Oscar for her performance because I think she's the only actress nominated that deserves to win. Tar was an awful movie! So yeah. Congrats to all the nominees- you all deserve this award but in the end... I chose Keke Palmer.
I will be accepting this award on her behalf.
Best Actor
The Nominees
Daniel Kaluuya- Nope
Austin Butler- Elvis
Robert Pattinson- The Batman
Brad Pitt- Bullet Train
Ralph Fiennes- The Menu
And The Winner is...
Ralph Fiennes for The Menu!
Not going to lie- I forgot this movie was from this year- otherwise I would have included The Menu for best picture... and I would have included Anya Taylor Joy for best Actress instead of Amandla Stenberg. The winner still is Keke Palmer and Nope... but The Menu was probably my second favorite movie I watched from 2022.
You may wonder why Brendan Fraser was not nominated for a Shaspen- and that is because I did not see The Whale yet... but I am rooting for him to win this year. He will still win another Shaspen... and I'm not done with the acting categories yet but let's do it...
Lifetime Acheivement Shaspen Award- Brendan Fraser
I grew up watching Brendan Fraser movies and I have been so excited to see the Brenaissance happen with The Whale.
My mom had a crush on Brendan Fraser- and my sister and I just really liked his movies so we went to see most of them in theaters when I was little. George of The Jungle, Dudley Do Right and Bedazzled were 3 movies I remember seeing in theaters at a really young age... and I don't think I saw either of The Mummy movies in theaters- I did see the third one in theaters... but the first 2 were always on tv while I was growing up and I've seen them many, many Times!
Congrats to Brendan Fraser for his lifetime acheivement Shaspen!
Now onto the supporting categories...
Best Supporting Actor
Ke Huy Quan- Everything Everywhere all At once
Brian Tyree Henry- Bullet Train
Justin Long- The Barbarian
John Lenguizamo- Violent Night
Edward Norton- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Okay let's get this out of the way... Daniel Craig was snubbed for the best actor Shaspen. But I'm giving Best Supporting Actor to the man I am hoping won the Oscar last night... and that is Ke Huy Quan. He was my favorite part of that movie and... I love the acting comeback stories that are in this years Oscar awards!
Best Supporting Actress
Jamie Lee Curtis- Everything Everywhere All At Once
Janelle Monet- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Zoe Kravitz- The Batman
Evan Rachel Wood- Weird: The Al Yankovitch Story
Anya Taylor Joy- The Menu
So I couldn't think of a lot of Best Supporting Actress nominees... I feel like Anya Taylor Joy and Janelle Monet could be submitted for Best Actress... but I saw an instagram account nominate Anya Taylor Joy for supporting so that's fine.
I can't decide who I want to win... again I'm hoping Jamie Lee Curtis gets the actual Oscar... but I think I'm going to give her the Shaspen also. I honestly would have nominated her for Halloween Kills too but that movie was bad. She's a treasure though!
Congrats Jamie Lee!
Best director is obviously Jordan Peele. Other directors were good... But Jordan Peele will always win The Shaspen.
Some honorable mentions that are not from 2022 but I did watch them in 2022.
So I started 2022 by watching essentially 3 movie franchises back to back so... I'm going to give each of these a Shaspen.
The Scream Movies- I had only seen the first previous and there is not a scream movie that I can say is bad.
The Saw Franchise- I LOVED these movies. Not all of them were good- but I'd watch them all again for sure. These are basically horror movie soap operas and... I just love the twists in them. Never thought I'd like this movie... but it was great!
James Bond- Aspen and I watched Every Single James Bond Movie in 2022... from Sean Connorey to Daniel Craig... these are such fun movies to watch And I feel like these movies are a part of us now. Our favorite one I think was Skyfall.
The best movie that wasn't from this year that we felt was a hidden gem of a movie was One Hour Photo starring Robin Williams. This is such a stylish looking movie, it was creepy, it was thrilling and you kind of like the villain of the movie and you can understand why he is the way he is. It wins a Shaspen.
Another Director we watched a lot of this year: Kevin Smith. We did not like Clerks 3- which was his movie that came out this year... but I liked his movies that we watched this year and he needs a shoutout in the Shaspen's.
And the movies I kind of forgot about- but could have been nominated... The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was fun and Pedro Paschal was great. I liked Thor Love and Thunder... particularly thought Christian Bale was great in it. The best soundtrack was probably Studio 666- which basically had a Metal Album from Foo Fighters that people loved. And I wanted to nominate Jenna Ortega for something... but her biggest role was Wednesday and that's a TV Show!
Also I loved Turning Red... but there just wasn't really a place for it here. That had a good soundtrack too.
Aspen had no say in this voting... but I know he agrees with some of these choices... and that Nope
Was the best movie of 2022.
Maybe we'll do another one of these for another category of things we like... the Asphannon's or something lol.
Bye!
-Shannon
