Movie Monday: The People’s Joker is the best Joker movie???

So a while ago my boyfriend and I were looking at movies that were shelved or cancelled releases or movies people may never actually see… and we found out that we could actually see one: The People’s Joker. The People’a joker is a parody movie of Joker kind of but it’s also told from the perspective of a trans woman who becomes joker. We decided to get tickets for the New York show that had a Q&A with the director and star of the movie: Vera Drew.

I loved this movie. A lot of people kind of joke about how Men love Joker and it is a very cis male specific movie… and as much as I like that movie- I love seeing a feminine retelling of Joker! It was just as funny, it was very real and dramatic and had a lot of similar themes to the movie Joker- but it had a much happier ending… and really good characters.

This movie was also made during Covid- so it was really interesting to see how they made some of the scenes without having the characters together to film a scene. They had a lot of animated segments and animated characters- and they even had a scene done with dolls- which was really cool. I think it took them a while to put all of these scenes together- they mentioned there were like 4 different cuts of this film and this one was the most complete. And it was great.

This was a very personal movie for the two writers of this movie- and you can tell they put their all in the movie and it came out really great. There was a lot of sad moments, but it was over all a comedy and it actually put a smile on my face by the end and I couldn’t stop smiling… and it wasn’t because of Smylex- it was a genuine smile! The end of this movie was really good and cute.

For me personally I kind of preferred this to Joker. It’s a lot funnier and I’m a girl- a cis woman- but still this felt more like a girl movie than Joker did. It also had some references to the Dc Universe and characters- all as parody of corse… so the dc legal team Doesn’t get upset… but I think anyone that is a fan of Batman and Joker would probably like this. I think anyone that’s a fan of comedy would like this too because there’s a lot of references to things in comedy too!

The People’s Joker is a great movie- and it’s a little bit hard to see it right now- there are screenings available in many different states and I think they said it was coming to 80or 90 theaters. It’s worth seeing for sure! I would even see it again if I get a chance to- I’m pretty sure it will eventually be available for home release and I’m thinking they might air this on IFC some day. It’s a much watch for sure.
