Movie Monday: The Movies and Tv Shows I Watched in January!
Okay so I'm going to talk about everything I watched in January. I'm going to do the movies I saw in theaters first- then my top 5... then I'm going to talk about all the other movies I watched (in order of how I liked them) then the TV Shows... and then the bottom 5 movies of the month.
What I saw in Theaters!
Wonka- So I actually LOVED this movie, I thought it was fun... and I might watch this movie for the movie I make my family watch with me on my birthday. It was cute!
Poor Things- This was probably my favorite movie I saw this month. I love Bella, I like Yorgos Lanthimos a lot... this was good!
Anyone But You- This felt like it could have been a 2000s rom com. It was so cute, really funny... and the end scene had the characters singing Natasha Beddingfield's Unwritten in character at different moments in the movie... and it kind of broke the fourth wall in a great way for a post credits scene. I love this one!
Top 5 Movies I Watched At Home
1.Oppenheimer- I didn't finish this movie but it was great to see it again. Just as good at home as it was in theaters!
2. Mafia Mamma- I loved this movie! It was a lot of fun and I love Toni Colette in any movie she's in... any genre. She's so funny in this one. I would recommend checking this out for Galentine's Day.
3. The Holdovers- Great movie, excellent performances... I think Davine Joy Randolph will definitely win for this and I'm kind of hoping Paul Giamatti wins... even though Cillian Murphy was fantastic too... very fun movie!
4. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa
This movie is more like Borat than Jackass and... it's got a fun plot and some really really funny pranks. Johnny Knoxville did a great job.
5. X Men- my boyfriend had seen the early X Men movies growing up- but I had never seen them... so this was my first time watching it and I loved it. I love Anna Paquin and... basically everyone in this movie.
The Rest... Ranked!
Deadpool 2- This was close to my top 5... I had to think if I really liked Bad Grandpa THAT much... but I did. And I forgot I watched The Holdovers this month- so that was obviously Top 5. Deadpool 2 was a fun movie but it wasn't as funny as the first movie. I really like Vanessa and she wasn't really in this one... so it just wasn't my favorite.
Goodburger 2- This one didn't really have a plot... but it was so funny. Kel Mitchell is a treasure and he was fantastic in this movie. Keenan is also really funny... but Kel was just SO GOOD it's hard to compare.
Better Watch Out- I watched this on my own like at the beginning of the year... and it's kind of a cringey horror movie... but it's got some fun twists. They were a little predictable but they were good. This is a Christmas themed horror movie that I would say is a home invasion movie.
Withnail and I- This is a movie I hadn't heard of... but Aspen and I saw it on Max and then we saw it on a comedy list... so we decided to watch it... and we didn't pay that close attention but we really did enjoy it! We kind of like movies that are just slice of life with 2 people going on adventures. It stars a young Richard E Grant and Paul McGann- who I didn't really know before watching this but he was a Doctor Who. It also has Richard Griffiths aka Uncle Vernon from the Harry Potter Movies.
I Hate Valentine's Day
This is a Nia Vardalos movie that she wrote, directed and stars in alongside her My Big Fat Greek Wedding Co-Star John Corbett. I've seen pretty much all of the Nia Vardalos movies and I knew this was my least favorite... but in rewatching it it's got a weird concept. I can't really say I dislike it... but I kind of do.
Ruby Gilman: Teenage Crackin
I didn't pay much attention to this movie... but it felt odd. I think it was too young for teenagers but too teenage for young kids. I'm not really sure who I would recommend this movie for. It wasn't bad though.
Tv Shows!
Before I talk about the bottom 5 list... I'll talk about the 2 tv shows that I want to talk about from January. I watched more shows than just these 2- but these were the shows that I finished or they were new to me... and one was a special that felt like it should count on its own.
The Golden Wedding- I loved The Golden Bachelor and this was a fun special to watch to follow it up. It was exciting to see Gerry and Theresa get married.
Frasier (2023)
So I just finished watching all of the original Frasier and I was excited to see the spinoff... which I watched from the beginning and finished this month. I really liked it! Not as good as the original- But still really fun!
Bottom 5
These are mostly movies that my boyfriend and I found at Thrift Stores or Dollar Tree. So if you've never heard of them... I'm not surprised.
1.Pompoko
This is one of the Studio Ghibli films my boyfriend didn't see. It wasn't bad- this is the least worst of the list... but it wasn't my favorite. It had a very bleak ending that was kind of beautiful and had a very powerful message but... it was so sad and the rest of the movie was just okay.
2. Cop Out
I had seen this movie on my first date ever and the movie was bad and the date kind of ended horribly too... as did the relationship. I do love Kevin Smith but this was not his best movie and he had a bad experience making this movie... and this was the only movie he directed that he didn't write so it wasn't really his regular movie. Plus this had been in development limbo for a while. It was originally made with James Gandolfini and Robin Williams in mind- which I think would have been amazing. Then I think it was Mark Wahlburg and Will Ferrel- who later starred in The Other Guys together... maybe it was just one or the other of them. This wasn't that bad- but it's definitely in the bottom category.
3) Homerun Showdown- again didn't pay much attention to this one- but... it wasn't the best. Matthew Lillard is still likable enough that this movie was watchable but... over all it's not great. Btw Matthew Lillard is in this one.
4) I Do and I Don't- I can't lie... we didn't finish this one. We had it on for maybe 5 minutes and it was just... there were a lot of plot holes- Bryan Callen was in it and he's icky... and it just was a no. So first off... the plot of this is that a couple wants to get married in a church and before they got married they either had to take a test or spend time with another married couple... so they didn't want to take the test- so they spent time with Jane Lynch and Matt Servitto who are wacky I guess? Idk it opens up with the Bride saying "I do and I don't" and then it flashes back.
So... I think the part that annoyed Aspen the most... besides the fact that Bryan Callen is a bad person... I told him "I'm pretty sure most churches suggest or require you to take a test before you get married in a church." My friends sister recently got married and she even mentioned that she was doing pre-cana- which is what the Catholic Church calls it.
Plus there's a similar movie that came out the same year this movie came out called License to Wed with John Krasinski and Mandy Moore as the engaged couple and Robin Williams as the crazy priest who's course they're taking.
5) Battlefield America
If I told you this was a dance movie would you believe me? This is a similar plot to The Mighty Ducks but with dancing... and the guy actually gets a DUI. And he doesn't want do community service for his DUI... but he was drunk driving and broke the law... so he had to do community service. The movie just kind of makes it seem like it's unfair that this guy has to do community service... but no. This man is terrible.
I think we finished this movie- but we didn't really pay attention. The dancing in it was pretty good but it was the drunk driving thing that got us. We couldn't root for this character cause they didn't really give us a reason to. He was supposed to do community service and he just wasn't.
I have seen people like this main character in real life... and they're criminals and so was he... so I couldn't root for the guy.
ANYWAY yeah that was the worst one this month! And everything else I watched!
Bye!
