Movie Monday: The Coffee Table- I guess with Spoilers?
Okay so I’ve been seeing reviews of this movie all over TikTok with people either saying they can’t even watch it or people saying it’s the most disturbing movie they’ve ever seen. Most people say that they don’t think you should know what’s going on in this movie other than this man buys a coffee table and things go wrong but… I feel like if you’re surprised by what happens you’ve never hit your head on a coffee table.
I’m not going to specifically mention what happens just because I don’t want to talk about it and I think that’s the real reason why people are saying go I’m not knowing. It’s dark.
So this man and his wife just have a baby and they move because one of their relatives dies and they leave the couple this nice apartment. So they just move in there and they have a baby and they go shopping and get this really ugly glass coffee table.
The salesman keeps saying the glass is unbeatable.
The wife really doesn’t want it- but the husband picks it out. He’s just kind of drawn to it and his wife didn’t let him pick out anything in the apartment, and he didn’t even get to pick out his son’s name… so I think he kind of wants it just because he knows that’s the one coffee table she doesn’t want.
Anyway- they get home, they realize a screw is missing from the table and it’s not as good as they thought. And the wife goes away to get drinks because his brother and the brothers girlfriend are coming over for lunch. She wants a moment alone from the baby so she leaves the baby with the dad… and that’s when the thing happens.
As far as gore goes, the moment happens off screen, but you know what happens and you know it’s not good. I have to say the movie is paced in a way that probably had me feeling more dread- but it also kind of softened the shock of the shocking moment. I would say there are 2 big shock moments that are hard to watch. The first one is off screen and they don’t show much of it afterwards and the second is at the end of the movie… and there’s a lot going on so I was like covering my eyes because I didn’t want to watch it… but by the time it happened I didn’t cover my eyes and they didn’t really show it fullly. So over all it was still incredibly disturbing but it wasn’t awful.
So this movie isn’t going to be a movie for everyone but it was a really fantastic movie and I would say if you enjoy thrillers, definitely check this movie out. It is disturbing but it is kind of a family drama, so if you like family dramas you might like this one too.
I was afraid this would be a pretentious movie just because I had heard so much about it I didn’t think it’d be worth the hype… but I would say it is. I feel like the concept of this movie isn’t easy to watch, but the way that the director did this and the actors are all kind of perfect for it… it was really good. Everyone in this movie had like a 10 out of 10 performance, every little detail in the movie paid off… which I really liked and over all this was just a great movie that I don’t know if I could watch again.
I forgot to mention this is also a Spanish movie I think- I’m pretty sure it takes place in Spain and the actors are Spanish. It’s subtitled and my boyfriend got the DVD of it because it isn’t available for streaming- just for digital download and it was the same price as the DVD just to rent it… so he just bought the dvd. It’s definitely worth watching but if you think it sounds like something you can’t watch… definitely know your boundaries- it’s not worth pushing your limits.
I would also recommend pausing this movie if you want to, or just look away, talk to whoever you’re watching it with, talk to other people in the room. It’s a hard watch but it is a really good movie and a good story.
That is everything- I hope you like this!
Bye!
