Movie Monday: The Chalk Zone Effect
This is a super specific Movie Critique that I have when a movie just has too much going on or the world the movie takes place in isn't that specific. I will say "Oh this is like Chalk Zone and I don't like Chalk Zone." So... I'm going to explain what a chalk zone is... then give an example of a bad movie that was like Chalk Zone...
So Chalk Zone was a Nicktoon that was released when I was getting a little too old to watch Nicktoons so... that is part of why it wasn't made for me exactly but... it isn't the best show ever. The theme song is annoying, the characters are a little bland... but my main problem is just the concept of it. Rudy- our main character- has magic chalk and with that magic chalk he can go to chalk world where all of his chalk drawings that he's ever done come to life. For me- this just made too much stuff go on in chalk zone. The main chalk creatures were his friend snap- a super hero and a princess named Rap-Punzel who was Rapunzel- but she raps... what do these two or any of the other chalk zone characters have in common??? Nothing.
Plus there really weren't a lot of rules to chalk zone. Getting chased by a dinosaur- no problem let's just draw a banana peel so he can slip on it. Lots of stuff like that.
The episodes were also broke down into 3 segments instead of one or two... and that just made it feel even more like too much was going on.
So what movie did I think was like Chalk Zone in the fact that too much was going on? Kevin Smith's Yoga Hosers.
This is part of Smith's Canada Trilogy- which he hasn't completed yet... so the only movies we have are this and Tusk which I also didn't like. I don't think these movies had bad concepts... but this one definitely had too much going on.
So every time a character was introduced- they had an intro slide which was basically just an instagram bio and it played an 8-bit sounding version of Oh Canada.... and this just kept happening- until the girls didn't have their phone on them. I just think that's a bit too much all for one movie... it was every single time any character was introduced... it was too much.
It was also a horror comedy I guess... but there was so much stuff they showed before the main plot of the movie happened that it just didn't really work as a horror movie.
They also did yoga and I guess that was a main plot point and how they defeated the monsters at the end??? But I didn't even notice that and I do yoga and know a bit about it so... It wasn't that great.
The best things I can say about the movie- if you're a Johnny Depp fan- he is in this movie with his daughter Lily Rose Depp and they have some scenes together and the way they look at each other and laugh is kind of sweet. I am not really a Johnny Depp fan- but he's a good actor and he was fun to watch in this and Tusk. I think he's in this one a bit more than he was in Tusk- but I think he did a better job in Tusk.
Justin Long is also the Yogi in this movie and he is so funny. I love Justin Long and he is really really funny in this role.
I feel bad rating Kevin Smith movies badly... I've seen him in real life- I did not interact with him but I ALMOST said something about Clerks 3 in his presence and I felt AWFUL especially knowing that he doesn't like critics seeing his movies. Normally I'd think that's a jerk move- but I have seen him in person so it's different lol. I like most Kevin Smith Movies I've seen... it's just a few I'm just not a fan of. And that's okay.
Anyway... that's my chalk zone theory and my experience maybe watching the worst movie I've ever seen.
Bye!
