Movie Monday: Seven Rerelease in IMAX
So I went to the movies for the first time this year and I saw a movie that has been out for decades and I have not yet seen it: Seven- directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and Gweneth Paltrow… and an actor who shall not be named- he’s kind of a surprise in this movie as the killer but he’s also committed horrible crimes in real life so I hate him and he did an excellent job playing a villain because he is a villain in real life. Allegedly.
But anyway back to the movie: Morgan Freeman plays a cop who’s just about a week out from retirement and Brad Pitt plays a young cop who just moved to the city. He’s married to Gweneth Paltrow- and although she isn’t in the movie all that much… literally my boyfriend got up twice during the movie and missed all of her scenes… but she adds a lot to the movie. Anyway both of the cops get involved investigating a serial killer that has been using the Seven Deadly Sins to commit his crimes… and the crimes and the way he tortures his victims are quite brutal… but the movie isn’t gory. It’s a gritty disturbing mystery, but they don’t show a lot of the victims… which I can appreciate. Gore doesn’t really disturb me much… but I’m glad this didn’t use too much gore and violence to tell the story.
Even though Gweneth Paltrow really isn’t in the movie much- she does kind of make the movie. She has this sort of instant connection to Morgan Freeman’s character and their friendship is kind of important to the movie. It also shows how both characters care about Brad Pitt’s character… it’s really nice. It does make the ending much more brutal too. I had been spoiled for the ending- which of corse includes the iconic What’s in The Box scene… but it was still suspenseful because you can see the clues beforehand and… it fits really well and they build the suspense so well.
Seeing this in IMAX and in theaters for the first time was a lot of fun too. This wasn’t the only imax movie my theater was showing- so the poster out front showed Mufasa- and that caused some slight problems. I saw some kids going into the theater, I think I saw them going back to the theater they came from after… and some people coming in were a little confused. I think they just showed Mufasa before showing Seven too- so that was a thing. We showed up a bit early and I think Mufasa was still playing- not when we were in the theater but they told us not to go in the theater when we first got there.
Also it started off very loud in imax and I thought our seats were going to give me a headache- But then the voices were kind of low and then it ended up being perfect. The screen looked great and IMAX and Dolby theaters are just a lot of fun. I would recommend going to some of the imax rereleases that they have going on.
And this is just a pretty perfect movie. My overall rating is 4 stars- although I guess it could be 4 and a half I rated Nosferatu 4 and and a half and I did like this more than Nosferatu… but I’m taking the half a star away because of Kevin Spacey. Plus there were some things I think went to quickly and some scenes that were too slow. And some details that never really paid off- like the cops kind of disrespecting Morgan Freeman’s character.
Also for how I judge the movie- it does get a 5 for the feel of the movie, the cast, how it looked, music and character development… but I’m not sure how to judge it based off of the press because… do I do that for its original release? Do I do it for the rerelease of all of the marketing that has been done around it since its release. I feel like the fact that it got a rerelease should just automatically give it a 5… but I’m not sure how to judge that fairly. Maybe I’ll research and do a post on it.
So overall it gets 4 stars and I guess my scoring system gives it a perfect 30… but maybe look out for more about Seven in the future.
Okay- that is everything! Hope you guys like it!
Bye!
