Movie Monday: Reservoir Dogs
Okay- so my boyfriend and I have started watching every single Tarantino Movie... and I'm going to post reviews on them here! I'll probably do one every other week or so... because I've been watching a lot of other movies on my own too... so yeah.
Anyway Reservoir Dogs is the first of Tarantino's featured movies. And... it's kind of a strange one. I think this is what first popularized people pointing guns at one another because... that's kind of how this movie ends... It's... an interesting one. It wasn't my favorite... I don't think it was my boyfriends favorite but I think he liked it more than I did. It's one you kind of have to watch two times to appreciate it probably... I'm only watching all these movies one time for the review- if I have updated thoughts on the movies after watching a second time- I'll let you know. But I have a feeling the general review on this will be the same.
Some Connections to other Movies
So we see Mr. Blonde drinking a drink from Big Kahuna Burger- which is a chain restaurant featured in Pulp Fiction, and some other movies from Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez- who is friends with Tarantino and they have similar styles to their movies.
Also we learn Mr. Blonde's name is Vic Vega and he is the brother of Vincent Vega from Pulp Fiction. Tarantino was working on a movie about the two brothers... but I'm pretty sure that's been scrapped. It'd be an interesting one to see though.
Back to The Review...
So... this is a heist movie about a group of ex criminals working on a job to steal some diamonds together. The operation is so big that they can't even use each others real names... here's a little character breakdown.
Mr. Brown- Quentin Tarantino. Dies early.
Mr. Pink- Steve Buschemi- guy that talks a lot but kinda lays low and stays out of trouble. He has a monologue at the beginning about not tipping... which is terrible.
Mr. Blonde/ Vic Vega- The darkest character maybe. But he's the one that Eddie trusts the most.
Mr. Orange- Dying all throughout the movie
Mr. White- He trusts Mr. Orange a little too much and gives him his name.
Okay... so that is everyone in the operation I guess... and each section kind of goes over their backstory. And it leads into each other really nicely. Like After Mr. Blonde's section we learn about Orange and then it flashes to Orange's story and then we go to someone else after that. It's told in a way that all makes sense and it's kind of cohesive.
My mom saw this movie late at night with my dad around when it came out... and it was too violent for her... she didn't like Mr. White's section of the story because that was really the outwardly violent movie. She just overall thought the movie was gross- hasn't been a fan of Tarantino since then. Honestly this is a violent movie- but it isn't really overly violent until the very end of the movie. And it wasn't very BLOODY compared to movies like Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill. It was his first movie and it was a lot earlier than those... so I feel like bloody gore wasn't the same as it is today.
I liked this movie... but it did kind of start a little slow and there were not many female characters in it at all... which I thought was weird... I guess that made me like it a little less.
There were some good twists to this movie and Aspen and I had never seen it before and we really weren't spoiled with it at all... we both even went "OHHHHH" when we learned who the undercover cop was. It was a good twist.
The characters were interesting and I feel like once you know how the movie ends- you can appreciate the full story a little bit better...but all in all watching it for the first time is still really enjoyable. I'm sure if you're a fan of Tarantino or even just a fan of super suspenseful and even somewhat bloody or gory action movies... you'll like this.
Bye!
