Movie Monday: Jackie Brown
More of the Quentin Tarantino Movie Marathon... this is probably his least known movie that is much different than anything else Tarantino has done... Jackie Brown. This was based off of a Novel- so it's much different than movies like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Tarantino doesn't even make a cameo appearance (well his voice is in the movie but that's it) - so it feels different.
That being said- it's nice to see Tarantino directing this movie and we get to see his perspective on the character. You really see that the guy has range and can make a movie that's not just a gory action movie and it's still really good.
So Jackie Brown is a flight attendant that works for our movie's villain- Arms Dealer Ordell Robbie played by Samuel L. Jackson. She gets caught and doesn't want to go to jail but she also know Ordell will kill her if she snitches on him... she eventually comes up with a plan where she works basically 3 different parties against each other so that it's in her favor. It's... hard to explain and I didn't understand the world that well in the movie... but it was interesting. It was kind of a heist movie and... it was just kind of interesting.
The thing that wasn't interesting however... was Jackie Brown is one of the best characters in all of these movies... and the first half hour or so of the movie doesn't even focus on her. It focuses on Ordell and Louis (played by Robert De Niro) who... are just kind of boring in comparison. I didn't think they were bad characters but they just... weren't as interesting as Jackie Brown.
Also Pam Grier is just... a delight to watch on screen. She is beautiful. The fashion in this movie is pretty great and every scene she was in I felt like I was kind of fawning over her. She looked really really good in the movie. I really want to watch her in more things because... she's a great actress and she just kind of commands your attention.
Overall this movie started out a little slow- but it was a great movie overall. Pam Grier is an absolute treasure... and while I don't think its' the best role for Samuel L Jackson or Robert De Niro... it was still a pretty fantastic movie. Overall I'd recommend watching this one for sure!
Bye!
