Movie Monday: Flight Risk
Okay- I was excited to see this one. The trailer looked really good and suspenseful and it’s got some star power behind it. This movie Stars Topher Grace as a man who is going to testify against a crime boss and Mark Wahlberg plays a pilot… and while they’re in the air they find out that Mark Wahlberg’s character isn’t the pilot they were supposed to have and so they chain him up and the Us Marshall- Madolyn played by Downton Abby’s Michelle Dockery- has to fly the plane herself.
So as I’ve mentioned before… I love thrillers set on a plane. There’s so much that can go wrong, it’s very suspenseful. As long as they are using the elements of being on a plane to build the suspense and the story- which this movie does- it’s pretty much a win for me. While I say that… you do have to turn your brain off just a little bit to enjoy this movie. If you think to much about why they didn’t check that the pilot’s ID matched the guy that they saw, or the fact that Madolyn does make some bad decisions and there’s a bit too much information that both she and Mark Wahlberg’s character give out… you’re not really going to enjoy the movie much at all. I know I kind of picked apart Wolf Man for the characters making some bad decisions… and it’s kind of not fair that I’m just overlooking it for this movie… but the dumb decisions made in this one don’t totally ruin the suspense for me.
One critique I saw about this movie from the YouTuber 3C Films was that a lot of this movie is just people talking on phones or the airport communication thing… which isn’t great. I don’t mind it because- again- I like movies that take place on planes and this felt a little more realistic for me.
Another problem with the movie is the dialogue. The things Mark Wahlberg says as the villain of this movie are kind of disgusting and they aren’t really needed. I think he’s just trying to sound like a criminal that has been to jail before but… I don’t think it makes him sound more dangerous or villainous and I think it’s disturbing but… overall it doesn’t add much to the movie.
Topher Grace’s character also doesn’t really add much to the movie. He’s just kind of a guy that talks to much that is just doing a job for bad people. I think this made him a little more relatable in the movie just because he is so annoying but… he’s not likable enough to want him to live or not. I still kind of wanted him to live but… yeah.
A lot of the movie was unintentionally funny… not in the way a bad movie like Madame Webb was… but there’s still some things you just have to laugh at. And the fact that it’s funny didn’t really take that much away from the suspesnse of the movie… this movie is kind of just a movie that you go to to get out of the house and eat some popcorn… and I’ll probably never watch it again… but it wasn’t bad and I had fun watching it. It’s not going to win any Oscar’s or anything… people probably won’t remember it in a year… but you could watch this with your grandparents and enjoy it. There’s nothing too embarrassing, nothing controversial or political, no harsh violence or gore… it’s just a movie.
Okay now for my overall rating… for personal enjoyment I would give it:
⭐️⭐️ and a Half out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ because I did enjoy it and I could watch it again but if I don’t watch it again it’s fine.
And for my ranking system.
Gets feelings of genre- 3.5
Cast- 4
How did it look- 3
Press- 4
Music- 2
Character development/ Writing- 3.5
Total: 20 out of 30
This is kind of a high grade but overall… if you saw the trailer and you liked it and you go in expecting what you saw in the trailer… you won’t be disappointed and I can recommend this one for sure.
Also didn’t mention this at all… but this was directed by Mel Gibson… which is something.
Bye!
