Movie Monday: 31 Days of Spooky Movies
I don't know if I consider myself a horror expert but hey... let me write a list of 31 movies I think would be great to watch around Halloween This Year. Also I'm late to the game- so you may have to double feature some of these!
Side note: I have NOT seen every horror movie- so if there's a movie that you think needs to be on this list that I didn't include... it's because I probably didn't see it. This also won't be all horror movies- theres a lot of just classics on here. I'll say a little something about all of them too.
1)Muppet Haunted Mansion
This movie gets me in the Halloween spirit and I love watching this early on during the season. I feel like it's not the best muppet special and it's not the best Haunted Mansion movie- but in my opinion of all 3 movies- this is the closest to the ride... so if you love the ride- I think you'd love this one.
2)Nightmare on Elm Street + Freddy's Revenge double feature
Okay I'm cheating cause there are some double features on the list. Freddy's Revenge is scarier I think and was my original pick for this... but because I do have 2 other Freddy movies on the list... I had to put this double feature early on. These are... probably the most Halloween ish. I like all the original Freddy movies so you really can't go wrong with any of them... but these are great.
3) The Barbarian (double feature with Freddy's Dead Possibly)
For some reason as soon as I put Nightmare on Elm Street on this list... I knew The Barbarian should come after it... and if you liked the Nightmare on Elm Street movies- go ahead and watch Freddy's Dead after The Barbarian. They're a similar vibe and I'm not going to go into detail as why. Freddy's Dead isn't the best Freddy movie- it's probably the worst... but these go together if you're looking for another Freddy movie for a double feature with this one.
4) Hellfest
Hellfest would be next on this list along the same lines as The Barbarian and Freddy's Dead. Not sure why- these 3 kind of go together for no real reason. This also takes place around Halloween so this is a good one to watch around Halloween specifically. It's a good little break from the Freddy movies.
5) The Shape of Water
So this isn't a horror movie- but I figured after that bit of scarier movies- this is a good break. It uses a lot of horror elements in it and when I asked my boyfriend for recommendations he immediately said "A Del Toro Movie" and I didn't see the one he recommended- Devil's Backbone...and since Crimson Peak is one I would recommend watching in the winter- The Shape of Water was my pick!
6)Parasite
I'm also not sure this is a horror movie- and I feel bad that this is the only Korean movie on this list... all of Bong Joon Ho's movies could be viewed around Halloween... but this one is going to be good to watch with the next movie I have on this list... which you might be able to guess.
7)Us
I think Us would be the best Jordan Peele movie to watch around Halloween. Nope is a little scarier but it's a summer movie- Get Out came out in February and I think that's a good time to watch it. Us is scary and has more slasher tropes I think.
8)The Guest
If you want a thriller that takes place at Halloween- I like The Guest. It's a little bit cheesy- but overall it is a fun, thrilling movie and it's fun to watch around Halloween time.
9) Scooby Doo Double Feature
I'm saying you should watch Both Scooby Doo live action movies around Halloween- but if you want to watch an animated movie too- I think Halloween is a great time for those!
10)Scream
Obviously you need more Matthew Lillard in your life because he is the most underrated actor of all time. Plus we're going to get back into some Wes Craven movies- so it's time to watch Scream! I might watch this early on this year... I kind of want to watch it this week.
11)Scream 6
This movie also takes place around Halloween- so this is a great one to watch around Halloween. You might want to watch all the scream movies before this one because they are going to spoil the Ghostface killers.
12) Wes Craven's New Nightmare
So if you watch the First Nightmare on Elm Street and you like Meta movies... you gotta watch New Nightmare. We still have 1 more Freddy movie on this list... I bet you can guess which one!
13) Friday The 13th and Friday the 13th 2 Double Feature!
So I've only seen the first 2 movies and the next movie on this list for the Friday the 13th movies- but you gotta watch them on Friday the 13th for sure. And there's a Friday the 13th in October which is the best time for a Friday the 13th!
14)Freddy Vs Jason
Yes! You gotta watch Freddy vs Jason. You have to know who Freddy and Jason are- and I think it's good to watch this right after you see Friday the 13th 2. This is a good one.
15. Candyman
I would say watch the original or the remake... the original is probably a little better- but this is a good one to watch after Freddy vs Jason because there was possibly going to be a Candyman VS movie but I guess it's hard to get the rights for that.
If you watch the newest candyman- which I guess isn't really a remake but more of a sequel or re-quel if you will- it is a very stylish movie which sometimes you just want to see!
16)Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2 U Double Feature
So you have to watch these on the 16th because my birthday is on the 16th! Plus these are good lighter horror movies to watch after watching all of those in a row. I love these movies- personal favorites of mine that... I might watch on my birthday again lol.
17) Nightmare Before Christmas
A classic and again... you might need a break from a bunch of slasher movies in a row.
18) M3Gan
So I wanted to keep a good mix of very scary horror, family movies+ horror comedies in here... but now we're at the point of the list where it's super scary movies and horror comedies lol. So M3gan is kind of both but there are so many laugh out loud moments here too... this is a fun movie that goes with my next movie- which is scarier.
19)Child's Play
I just watched the first one of these movies recently and I was surprised. I didn't know if I'd like Chucky or not but... I liked it! It was scary and I liked that they had a Final Kid instead of a real Final Girl. This is a good one!
20)Hellraiser
I watched this around Halloween last year and this is definitely when I think you should watch this. It's also good if you like puzzle type movies...plus this is just weird and scary.
21)Jennifer's Body
This I think is a good follow up to Hellraiser because it's a horror comedy... but these both have similar sexual themes and they're both kind of big LGBTQ+ movies... which is pretty cool. I liked Jennifer's Body when I first saw it 1) because I'm obsessed with the soundtrack 2) I liked horror comedies. So many of my friends said this was a bad movie and I loved it!
22) V/H/S + V/H/S 2 Double Feature
Last year I got Covid on my birthday and I watched all the VHS movies and I have a ranking of them on this blog. The first 2 are the ones I recommend the most... especially around Halloween... but if you get Covid around Halloween and it's also around your birthday... watch the VHS movies.
23) Saw (Saw 1-3 Triple Feature if you want!)
The first 3 Saw movies are the best but they're all pretty great! The first one is probably the scariest of the 3 though.
24) The Platform
So I actually don't really like this movie... but if you're in the mood to watch something kind of disgusting around Halloween- this is what I'd pick. I also think most people seem to like this movie- I just thought it was a little pretentious... it's not awful though.
25)Hocus Pocus Double Feature
So after that... a lightlet movie to watch would be the Hocus Pocus movies. I like them both- The second is my niece's favorite movie I think. She's watched it so many times! She likes the first one too.
26)Poltiergiest
This I think is a good first horror movie to watch because it's scary but it's not too scary. Plus I don't really like The Exorcist that much- and this is similar but different.
27) Beetlejuice
Another one of my favorites- and my niece actually likes this one a lot too. I didn't see this for a few years and I've been trying to make a point of watching it once a year at least now- even if it's not at Halloween this is a movie I love and watch. I'm excited for Beetlejuice 2 as well but I'd be even more excited to see a filmed version of Beetlejuice the musical because I saw it last year and LOVED it.
28) Halloween+ Halloween Ends if you'd like
Okay so the only Halloween movies I've seen are Halloween- the original- and Halloween Ends... and this is a bizarre way to watch these movies. The original Halloween is great and Halloween Ends is... such a weird way to end the Lori Strode/ Michael Myers saga. I can't say I hated the movie because it was thoroughly entertaining but... it's not good. Those are my only real thoughts about it. This year I want to watch more of these!
29)Ready or Not
I didn't originally have this movie on my list... but there's something about a slasher with a woman in a bride dress that I think is cool. I feel like this one is a good one to watch around Halloween.
30. Addam's Family Double Feature and It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
I forgot about The Addam's family when I made this list because I don't watch the first one every year- and the second one you can watch around Thanksgiving if you want... but Addams Family Values is definitely a must watch every year at some point. Addams family 1 Is good too.
And I just watched The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and I love it! Great movie and it's pretty short!
31. The Babadook
I think this is the scariest movie I have on this list... and this is amazing. I just watched this recently and I don't often get scared in movies- but this is pretty scary! I really like this movie and if you want to watch something really scary on halloween- this is what I'd pick!
That's my movie list! I hope you guys like it!
Bye!
