M3gan Review

Every once and a while a horror movie comes out and I'm like "you know what- I bet this will be good" even if it looks kind of bad. Smile might have been that movie last year for a lot of people- but for me it was M3gan and I have to say- it exceeded my expectations... I almost gave it 5 stars on letterboxed... but... yeah.

Synopsis

After a tragic accident a little girl is taken in by her aunt- a robotics engineer with no idea how to take care of a child. She does- however- know how to build an AI child... M3gan- a life size doll she's working on for a toy company. After the girl grows attached to Megan, Megan starts to also grow attached and will do anything to help the girl... even kill.

Review

So this movie immediately was a deeper story than I thought. I think this movie could hit really hard for parents especially or maybe for people that were unexpected parents. There were so many things in the first part of the movie that I would have liked to take notes... but I just didn't. I had too much to say that I couldn't write down in the movie theater.

The kills in this movie were all kind of unexpected. There were a few characters I was like "ohhh this person is going to die" and they didn't and others that I thought "ohhh they won't kill this person" but they did.

They also used a lot of different horror tropes in this movie really really well. There was a school that took place outside that was our "out in the woods" horror moment. There was a good 2 person fight that felt like what the Halloween Ends Trailer promised. I don't know that this is what people will take away from the movie as a whole- but it's something the movie did so so well.

There's a lot in this movie that went unsaid too... I have like 2 theories about this movie that I might end up writing in a separate post... don't hold me to that though lol I've never written a movie theory before! It might not be good... but yeah. There was a lot to the movie.

Also this movie was laugh out loud funny at times. The whole movie theater was cracking up. It definitely did not take itself too seriously the way a lot of other horror movies did. A lot of people compare this to James Wan's Malignant... and I would say I don't think Wan took Malignant seriously but the movie seemed a little more serious than Megan did... and I definitely preferred Megan for that reason. Some of the singing that Megan did in the movie was overused- but in general I think that made the horror of the movie a little bit better paced and scarier in general.

I did prefer the first part of the movie to the second part- which was when the horror really started just because the set up is so interesting. There was a lot of moments in this movie that weren't used in the heavy marketing of the movie... so that was really good.

Overall this was just a great movie. Better than I expected. The best movie I saw in theaters this year so far (although I think I did like Glass Onion and The Menu better) I just think this is a fun one... I'd say it's worth seeing in theaters with a crowd- but it's worth seeing anyway. I'm for sure going to buy the Blu ray of it and watch it again.

Bye!
