Hadestown Review
Okay so I saw Hadestown and... the way I saw it wasn't ideal... we had fantastic seats but we took NJ Transit to get there, there were train delays and we were 20 minutes late to the show. So always plan to be in the city as early as possible just in case... but yeah... I missed the first few songs but still! I loved the show and I really connected to the characters.
So there are a few different types of musicals: Very Sad musicals, like Hamilton and very funny musicals like The Producers or Beetlejuice. This one was a very sad one. A lot of times with the sad musicals, they are almost all singing without any talking in between... this was kind of that too. So if you listen to the soundtrack- you can kind of see what the play is about... this one is kind of different though. It's a little more like... you need to see the choreography to get the full effect. The set design was also kind of surprising to me- and the costume changes.
I think there was some symbolism that I didn't know or understand before seeing the play. I didn't 100 percent notice it while watching the play- but I kind of did. The rose mostly- it kind of reminded me of the Bullet in Hamilton... very subtle but it's there and it's good.
The cast I saw was really good... I don't know if I liked them as much as the original cast from the recording... I would say the standouts for me were Persephone and Euridicye... and Orpheus, Hades and Hermes were also good- but I would have liked to see the original cast.
Also my boyfriend and I weren't sure if we were going to be let in to see the play... I'll probably talk about that on Story Sunday... but the first song we heard was really beautiful and emotional and I just started SOBBING when I heard it. It was beautiful. And I kept just thinking about my boyfriend and the story of Orpheus and Euridicye and how we always walk by each others side... and I just started to break down and lose it. The ending of the story is so sad- But I still think their love story is incredible and worth being told and... it's very touching and beautiful... but tragic.
So for some reason this music and this play really really connected with me. I'm Greek- so I do have an interest in Greek Mythology to begin with... but this was a reallly great retelling. I loved the two couples, Orpheus and Euridicye and Hades and Persephone. It was really beautiful.
We also had great seats... and this is a show I'd say it's worth splurging on great seats for. I'm definitely going to get orchestra seats again... we were so close I thought Euridicye could see me crying at her beautiful voice!
Bye!
